after many hours in the car and a brief interlude at my parents' house in connecticut, the gang and i have made it to maine.
we cut it close, but managed to get aboard the 1 o'clock ferry from rockland to vinalhaven.
the weather here couldn't be more perfect -- a wonderful break from the heat wave the rest of the east coast is experiencing. the food we've cooked has been delicious and our days have been spent quarry swimming, reading books, napping and walks around the island. it truly is heaven haven.

a shrimp and summer couscous salad dinner goes very well with a riveting game of cranium

though i've swam in the quarry nearly every summer for the past dozen, i am still petrified to jump from the rock ledge. it's only about 15 feet high but somehow it is still terrifying. my friends: no problem! jumped right in! i on the other hand, took about 30 minutes to feel "ready" to take the leap. here i am with them trying to reason with me, checking my pulse and finally jumping! success!
